WOW Makes A Splash In New York! Team Malibu Takes Home Overall Title; Team Overtons Captures Event

MONROE, NY (August 29, 1998) -- It was a true fight to the finish for the four teams of WOW (Women of Water Sports) on Tour, battling injuries, illnesses and each other at the final tour stop in Monroe, NY on August 29. Team Overtons captured its first win of the year, while Team Malibu took home the WOW on Tour overall team title.

Team Malibu came into New York leading Team Nautique by 1.5 points, leaving the door open for the overall tour team title. Team Overtons came in first and Team Nautique came in second in the event itself, giving Team Malibu a run for its money. With team members Jill Knutson nursing a severely sprained ankle, and Lori Krueger battling the flu, Team Malibu managed a third place finish, just enough to capture the overall team title. Plagued all year by injuries, Team Mastercraft finished fourth at both the event and in the overall team standings. Team member April Coble missed the last two events due to a torn ligament and slalom team member Jennifer Leachman broke her fibula and tibula just hours before the event.

Twin Lakes in Monroe proved to be a world class venue with all the athletes going full out. The jumping started the day with Toni Neville of Team Overtons leading off the pack and cracking a 145 footer. Emma Sheers of Team Nautique followed with a 142 footer, Sherri Slone of Team Malibu was third with a 138 footer and Lulu Botero of Team Mastercraft rounded out the field for fourth.

Andrea Gaytan of Team Malibu led all wakeboarders for her third victory of the year, amassing 70 points and six inverts. Brandi Hunt came back strong for Nautique, placing second and getting 5 inverts for the two extra bonus points. Lauren Horf, a tour rookie, took third for Team Mastercraft, followed by Sonja Sheffler of Team Overtons. Sheffler has been out most of the season healing a broken heel.

In tricks, Jane Gay came through with a strong performance of 5,840 to win the event for Team Overtons. Britt Larson, making her first appearance on the WOW Tour for ’98 for Team Mastercraft, placed second with 5,540. Rhoni Barton backed up rookie Regina Jacquess to capture third for Team Nautique with 5,280. The surprise of the day was superstar Tawn Hahn placing fourth with a score of 4,820 for Team Malibu. Hahn had tricked well over 6,500 points at two other events in inclement conditions, and had problems with the perfect conditions at Monroe.

Slalom was the final event of the day and par score was set high at 4 @38 off. Jennifer Leachman was at the hospital, which left Karen Truelove to back her up in the overall slot. Overtons was leading Nautique by one point and Malibu by two. Kjellander (Nautique) went out strong to get 3@38 off and take the lead, just missing par by one buoy. Knutson (Malibu), on her sprained ankle, managed an incredible 3@35, leaving Graham in the driver’s seat. Graham came out strong with an awe-inspiring run of 3@38 off to tie Kjellander and take the team title home for Overtons. Michelle Simpson, another young gun, replaced Leachman with a score of 21/3@32 off for Mastercraft. Karen Truelove backed her up with 1@38 off, placing third.

Said co-founder of the WOW Tour Sherri Slone, "The stop in New York was truly a world class professional event. The skiing was incredible, national and international media and television covered the event, tour sponsors were on site and once again the event winner was not decided until the last skier skied."

Prior to the final Monroe, NY stop, WOW athletes did a media blitz in New York City and ended the week with a party at the All Star Cafe. Many VIPS were on hand and the athletes were inducted into the All Star Cafe hall of fame. The excitement was telecast live to every All Star Cafe throughout the world.

Following the event, on Sunday the athletes ended their week in New York by boarding the 47' Windspirit, a state of the art performance sailing catamaran, and a Mastercraft X-Star for a trip to the Statue of Liberty. The women hooked up their ropes and donned their skis for a few laps around the lady, then skied back to the city behind the Windspirit.
